Center for Citizens Communications and Justice
(CECICOJU).
Centre for Citizens Communication and Justice (CECICOJU) was formed by a group of Young Civil society activists mainly the Media practitioners who were working in Rwenzori Su-region during the massacre of many Ugandans at the Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu by the Ugandan Army. Over 500 people mainly Youth and Women were killed while others were detained in Torture chambers. After observing the Holific massacre, Journalists and members of the community agreed to form a voice for the voiceless in order to seek Justice. The organization was was registered in Uganda in March 2017 with a vision of securing ‘Human rights Victims.
Between 2017 and 2019 CECICOJU focused on monitoring, documenting and publicizing human rights violations. It applied a direct attack on political despotism. Through direct action protests and support to victims and survivors of violations, the organisation established itself as an advocate for civil and political rights in Uganda , by linking human rights struggles with the need for reforms in political leadership and institutions.
From 2019 to date CECICOJU has expanded its advocacy strategy to include social and economic rights in order to attack economic despotism. This resulted to a radical shift in approach that led us to developing capabilities of those affected by human rights problems to advocate for their rights. We have invested in community-based Human Rights Education (HRE) and shifted its advocacy approach from ‘reactive, one-off’ activism to more nuanced processes, participation of those affected by specific human rights violations and targeted reforms at policy and legislative levels. The organisation developed its first strategic plan for the period 2018-2023..
The 2018-2023. Strategic Plan focuses on strategies and actions aimed at enhancing community-driven human rights advocacy by building the capacities of citizens to deal with their immediate human rights concerns as well as engage in strategic actions to transform structures responsible for human rights violations.
From 2018 to 2020, CECICOJU has expanded the impact of its work to play an active role in procuring citizen-led reforms towards a more just, democratic and human rights-respecting Ugandan society.
For the Year 2020 on wards CECICOJU is embarking on promoting economic and livelihood support thtough Income Generating activities, Skilling for Employability, and Sustainable Agriculture.
